The special security meeting had as objective to evaluate the socio-political, economic and security challenges in Cameroon as well as to fine-tune all possible actions and propositions to eradicate all forms of threats in the international, regional and national levels.
At the international level, there is need to fight against the persistence of numerous conflicts and rivalry tensions that affect the image of the country especially at the world’s economic level.
Meanwhile at the regional level, the political security is marked by the presidential elections in other countries which may serve as a catalyst for change in the electoral landscape of the country. While at the national level, security situation is characterized by major security threats in some parts of the country like in the Mayo-Sava, Mayo Tsanaga, Mayo-Danay and Logone and Chari Divisions of the Far-North Region, like the isolated threats posed by the terrorist sect, Boko Haram. Meanwhile the Adamawa and the North Regions are plagued by acts of kidnapping for ransom, cattle theft, cross border criminality, highway banditry and a host of others.
In the North-West and South-West Regions, the socio-political tensions are on a decline thanks to the prowess of the Defence and Security Forces. The borders with neigbouring countries were also on focus during this meeting as the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence reiterated the importance of enhancing border controls and improve cooperation between security forces to better manage the actual security context.
To this effect, the Defence Boss called on the central and territorial commanders to fasten the security belts in their areas of jurisdictions by increasing vigilance at the level of borders that is; land, air and sea. The aim of the security meeting was also to assess potential security risks, devise security strategies to mitigate them and provide a conducive environment for students and staffs to resume school hitch free without fear nor threat.
After reviewing the security aspects and potential threats, Minister Beti Assomo Joseph also laid emphasis on the necessary adjustments and the need to strengthen security and vigilance measures throughout the national territory before, during and after the election. He did not go by without condemning any form of violence, and encourage constructive dialogue among differing opinions to promote national unity during the upcoming presidential election.
