The special security meeting had as objective to evaluate the socio-political, economic and security challenges in Cameroon as well as to fine-tune all possible actions and propositions to eradicate all forms of threats in and around the national territory.
The in-camera meeting was on the general evaluation of the country’s security situation with special emphasis on the upcoming 53rd edition of the National Day, coming up in a period marked by multifaceted challenges both nationally and internationally.
At the international level, there is need to fight against drug trafficking, massive immigration and extremist terrorism. While at the national level, the current security situation is characterised by major security threats in some parts of the country such as in the Far-North Region where Boko Haram terrorists perpetrate atrocities.
To this effect, the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence centered his speech on the importance of increased surveillance and intensified military operations to counter this threat, not forgetting the necessity of regional coordination with neighbouring countries, such as Nigeria, to effectively combat terrorism.
In the North West and South West Regions where the socio-political tensions are considerably on a decline, thanks to the prowess of the Defence and Security Forces with evidence the hitch free unfolding of recent major events such as the mountain race, National Youth Day, International Women’s Day and Ramadan. The borders with the Central African Republic and Chad were also of focus during this meeting as the Defence Boss reiterated the importance of enhancing border controls and improve cooperation between security forces to better manage the actual security context.
After reviewing the security protocols and potential threats, MINDEF as usual prescribed the necessary adjustments and the need to strengthen security and vigilance measures throughout the national territory before, during and after the National Day commemoration.
