SPORTS: THE NATIONAL GENDARMERIE LAUNCHES THE 2023 EDITION OF THE MILITARY AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES TOURNAMENT

On Thursday July 20, 2023, Brigadier General TOUNGUE Elias, Commander of the First Gendarmerie Region, presided over the ceremonial launch of the “COUPE SED/CGN” 2023 edition at the Yaoundรฉ military stadium. The match marking the start of the various competitions began at 10am. m, home to the Gendarmerie Multi-Purpose Intervention Regiment (GPIGN) and the High Command of Gendarmerie Training Schools and Centers (CECIG). It ended in a 4-2 GPIGN victory, in an electrifying atmosphere with lots of entertainment from the Gendarmes who flocked to the stadium.

After this first match, which upset units from the central services, units from the various gendarmerie regions will start participating next week, as the competition schedule provides for matches to be played between central services and territorial commands from the quarter-final phase onwards.

In his opening remarks, Brigadier General TOUNGUE Elias passed on Mr SED/CGN’s instructions to the athletes, which are fair play and consistent discipline to strengthen cohesion among them. He also reminded them that physical fitness, military and sporting activities are crucial for the defense and security forces to be committed to their tasks, as work ethic and physical skills are essential to the success of their various missions.

In addition to traditional disciplines such as soccer, handball, volleyball, basketball, archery and commando marching, this 2023 edition of the “COUPE SED/CGN” also includes poetry and painting competitions.
