This time, it involves a family in the Mvog-Mbi neighbourhood of Yaounde whose child was abducted by a woman and taken to Douala, exactly two weeks ago.
The Gendarmerie Operational Command Post (PCOPS) was immediately called in to investigate, in order to hunt down the alleged thief and get the child back.
To this end, Lieutenant-Colonel NANA II, head of PCOPS, called on the Akwa North and Akwa South Gendarmerie Brigades, where the suspect was seen.
In the early hours of Thursday October 03, 2024, elements of both Gendarmerie units arrested the alleged baby thief with the child in the Bonamoussadi neighbourhood, with the collaboration of the population.
Acting on instructions from the Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the PCOPS, the suspect and the baby were brought back to Yaounde. During interrogation, the suspect stated that she faked being pregnant by her fiancée, that she had given birth and had left the child in the care of her parents. She added that he ran away when the police arrived.
Baby MOUSSOUA ASSASSI, who is barely thirteen months old, was taken to Yaounde where she was reunited with her parents, ASSASSI ELANDI Jules and IKARA OLINGA Armelie.
The National Gendarmerie is continuing its investigation, with a view to breaking up the entire child trafficking ring.
The National Gendarmerie urges the general public, particularly the parents, to be more vigilant and to watch their offspring closely. They were equally asked to denounce inappropriate things that are going on around them by calling the toll free numbers 113 and 1501, which are available 24h/24.
