Road safety : the National Gendarmerie introduces drones into its surveillance system to curb road accidents
In a bid to curb the ever increasing number of fatal accidents on our major roads, the National Gendarmerie is stepping up its road safety surveillance system with the use of drones.

It is in this light that on October 11 to 13, 2024, a team of Information and Communication Systems (ICS) specialists from the Signals Service of the National Gendarmerie were deployed along the Yaounde-Bafia-Makenene highway to experiment this new high-tech equipment.

Used to reinforce the regular surveillance system, notably the Command Car, these latest-generation drones provided aerial surveillance on this highway in order to detect most recurrent road traffic offences, namely: crossing the continuous line, improper overtaking and many other dangerous behaviours.

Equipped with high-definition cameras, these tools were able to capture images of offenders, and through high-resolution videos, it was possible to read the number plates of offending vehicles. Thanks to their long surveillance range of more than 3 kilometres, these drones made it possible to arrest irresponsible drivers safely and at a prior date.

According to the teams on the field, this experimental phase was a great success. In just three days, the drones were able to detect about thirty cases of inappropriate overtaking and crossing of continuous lines.

Based on these convincing results recorded during this experimental phase, the drones will now be deployed on all the major roads of the country as part of the 4th Generation of operation ‘Fight against road accidents and road traffic offences’.
