In the National Gendarmerie, the rank and file relates to the ranks of Student-Gendarme, Gendarme and Lance corporal.

To belong to this corps, those interested must pass a direct competitive examination organized by the Ministry of Defence following the conditions laid down in a press release by the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence.

The competitive examination takes place in four stages during which candidates who fail to meet the requirements are gradually eliminated: the preliminary medical check-up, the physical fitness checks, the written tests and the in-depth medical examination.

Those who are finally admitted as Student-Gendarmes undergo an initial training, also known as “Common basic training”(CBT)This six month training takes place in joint training centres, such as the National Armed Forces Training and Development Centre (CPEFAN) in Ngaoundal, the National Armed Forces Training Centre (CIFAN) in Ngaoundéré, and the National Armed Forces Training Centre (CIFANCIFAN) in Djoum, among others.

After this initial training, the young recruits are sent to the High Command for Gendarmerie Schools and Training Centres (CECIG) for six months, where they undergo a specific training tailored to the missions of the Gendarmerie.

After spending these six months at the Gendarmerie Training Centers, notably at at Camp Yeyap in Yaounde, the Multi-purpose Intervention Group of the National Gendarmerie camp (GPIGN) in Mbankomo and the Law Enforcement Training Centre (CPTMO) in Awaé, Student Gendarmes are awarded a Technical Aptitude N°1, General Service option (CAT 1 SG), which enables them to hold the rank of Gendarme, after a year of probation in Gendarmerie units.
